Back in the Game: Zander’s Story

Zander, an aspiring college football player, first crossed paths with Nemours Children’s Health after suffering a game-related injury. As luck would have it, Dr. Julia Fink, Nemours’ orthopedic specialist, was the team doctor on the field. After the game, Dr. Fink brought him in for an X-ray and MRI, setting the course for his recovery.

The injury turned out to be an acromioclavicular joint separation (AC joint separation), which worsened during the state football championship game. Zander’s team went on to win the game, but his shoulder pain lingered, especially with throwing, even after physical therapy. To resolve the issue, Dr. Fink performed an AC joint reconstruction. Following surgery, Zander was in a sling for six weeks and underwent three months of physical therapy. By May, he was able to start his throwing program, and by August, he was ready to kick off the football season, stronger than ever.

From his first appointment at Nemours Children’s Health, Lakeland, Zander felt reassured and supported. “Everything was awesome!” Zander says with enthusiasm. “Everyone was so nice and helpful. I felt like they really cared.” Dr. Fink, who worked closely with Zander throughout his recovery, shares her thoughts on his determination: “Zander has been an outstanding athlete both on and off the field through his recovery and the hard work of physical therapy, all the while still being a leader for his team.”

Now in recovery, Zander is excited about the future and how far he has come. “I feel fantastic. So far, my shoulder’s been stronger than ever,” he shares, reflecting on the impact of the physical therapy and personalized care he’s received.

While the road to recovery continues, Zander’s outlook remains positive. “I will continue to do PT and different exercises to keep my arm healthy,” says Zander. His eyes are set on playing college football—a dream that is now within reach thanks to his dedication and the support of Nemours.

To others facing similar injuries, Zander says, “Listen to your doctors, but also listen to your body. Trust the process and be patient.” His journey serves as a reminder that, with the right care and mindset, recovery is possible—both on and off the field.
