Innovation in Pediatric Care: Meghan’s Story

Meghan’s journey with Bladder Neck Dysfunction unfolded over the course of several years, involving many visits to urologists. It was only when she sought the expertise of Dr. Hagerty, making the journey all the way from Rhode Island to Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, that a diagnosis was finally made.

Before treatment at Nemours Children’s, bladder issues had caused many complications throughout Meghan’s life. Pain, discomfort, urinary retention, and bladder spasms were constant obstacles, making it difficult for her to attend school and participate in social activities. Her condition had become a barrier to living her teenage life.

However, Nemours proved to be a place of hope for Meghan and her family. The kindness and compassion given by every staff member, from the front desk to the medical professionals, left a lasting impression. So much so that Meghan even suggested relocating to Delaware upon leaving the hospital – a testament to the care she received.

Meghan’s treatments at Nemours included a sacral neuromodulation procedure by Dr. Hagerty, the only physician in the region who does this procedure. “Voiding dysfunction is a problem that affects countless children,” says Dr. Hagerty. “This can lead to UTIs, pain, incontinence, and difficulty voiding. Meghan has struggled with difficulties voiding for several years and has tried numerous medications and noninvasive options. She was sent to me for consideration for a sacral neuromodulator. After speaking to her and her mother she seemed to be a perfect candidate. It is an absolute privilege to be able to help Meghan and other children with similar difficulties.”

This procedure involves the implementation of a sacral nerve InterStim device, which helps to control the pelvic nerves and bladder. Meghan’s recent sacral neuromodulation procedure marked a significant milestone at Nemours, as she was the 50th patient to receive it. This treatment offers hope for patients like Meghan, paving the way for improved quality of life.

While Meghan still faces various medical challenges, the sacral neuromodulation procedure has been a remarkable first step towards recovery. Meghan’s mother, Kathleen, expressed optimism about Meghan’s future. She says Meghan is determined to return to school and pursue an internship working with animals. In offering advice to others facing a similar journey, Kathleen says, “Don’t give up! The right care and the right team of providers are out there.” Meghan’s resilience, coupled with Nemours’ expertise, sets the stage for a future full of potential for Meghan.
