For 23 years, Bucky thrived in the dynamic and fast-paced world of the airline industry. “It was an exciting career that offered the opportunity to travel to places in the US and abroad,” Bucky reflects. But Bucky felt there was always something more he needed to do, a deeper sense of purpose that he couldn’t ignore. “There was always a feeling inside urging me to find a way to better help others.” Bucky grew up in a large family of ten children, where the values of service and community were deeply ingrained. Four of his brothers served their country through military service, and two of those four went on to become Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), while another became a Registered Nurse (RN). His sister, too, dedicated her life to nursing. Witnessing their dedication and the impact they had on others, Bucky began to see a clear path for himself. […]

Going Beyond Medical Care: Caleigh’s Story

In November 2024, 2-year-old Caleigh woke up not feeling well and with concerning symptoms. Her family noticed red areas under both of her armpits and took her to her pediatrician for assessment. “She was being treated for Strep Throat and Scarlet Fever,” shares her mother, Megan. However, after two days, Caleigh’s condition only worsened, and she stopped eating and drinking. “Caleigh wasn’t getting better,” says Megan. “My husband & I decided to take her into our local ER where she was evaluated.” Upon arrival, the medical team assessed Caleigh and suspected Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome (SSSS), a rare but serious condition caused by a Staphylococcus toxin. Nursing fit into those categories perfectly and that’s what led me to apply to nursing school.” But Jonathan’s story here at Nemours Children’s Health is unique. Here’s his incredibly unique journey in his own words: In April of 2023, I was running in the Mimosas for Marrow 5K that is hosted by a previous oncology patient and her family. At this 5K I connected with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), who added me to the national donor database. In November, I then found out that I had […]
