Scoliosis Awareness Month: Willie’s Story

At three years old, Willie was diagnosed with infantile idiopathic scoliosis, a condition that caused a curvature in his spine.

Willie’s journey began when his mother, Breana, took him to see several specialists because he wasn’t hitting developmental milestones on time. Willie started walking and crawling later than other children his age. He also began to experience chest pain and shortness of breath. At first, Willie’s specialists thought he might have cerebral palsy or multiple sclerosis. It wasn’t until they went to Nemours Children’s Health in Jacksonville that he was diagnosed with scoliosis.

Willie underwent a rigorous treatment plan that included wearing a halo and using traction to stretch his large curve before surgery, a rare process reserved for special cases. He also had many occupational and physical therapy sessions. With the help of Dr. Kevin Neal, Willie is in complete recovery at 10 years old.

It was a tough journey, but Willie is a trooper. His mother, Breana, couldn’t speak highly enough of Dr. Neal and the clinicians at Nemours Children’s. “He’s so knowledgeable and down to Earth,” said Breana about Dr. Neal. “The nurses and other clinicians were amazing as well. They made us feel like we were part of the family.”

“Willie’s favorite memories from Nemours were when Dylan from Art With a Heart would come and spend hours in his room with him. After Willie’s surgery, Dylan made him a poster of his favorite basketball team. Even though Willie was still groggy, he was very excited to see it. Willie also loved when he got a dream room makeover.”

“Though Willie’s recovery was rough, he was determined to get back to his normal life,” says Breana. “He’s getting used to his spine being straight up and down instead of curved. He’s looking forward to playing sports and doing karate like any other normal child.”

Willie’s positive attitude was infectious. He made the experience pleasant for anyone he met. “His slogan was, ‘This won’t be forever,’” says Breana. “He always planned ahead and looked to the future. Even during his hardest moments, Willie worked to get through it.” Willie’s story is a testament to the power of determination. With the help of dedicated clinicians at Nemours Children’s Health, he was able to overcome the challenges of scoliosis and is now looking forward to a bright and healthy future.
