Born with esophageal atresia type A and a history of chronic pneumonia, Island’s health journey has been far from straightforward. At the age of 9, the diagnosis of thoracogenic scoliosis added another layer of complexity, impeding even the simplest of tasks. He struggled to tie his shoes and often experienced intense back pain while doing everyday things. Sitting in class, walking, and even trying to sleep at night proved difficult.

At Nemours Children’s Health, Jacksonville, Island was surrounded by specialists who treated him with care, skill, and a dedication that went beyond the clinical. His journey began with a comprehensive evaluation by Dr. Kevin Neal, an expert orthopedic surgeon, who diagnosed the severity of his scoliosis and recommended spinal fusion surgery. This procedure, which involves fusing vertebrae together to straighten the spine, was a critical step in managing his condition and improving Island’s quality of life.
The care Island received at Nemours Children’s was reassuring for him and his family. “The experience has been great,” Island says. “The care team at Nemours have given us the comfort to trust and move forward with every recommendation about my health.” This trust was built through consistent communication, empathy, and a genuine concern for his well-being. His care team took the time to explain every step of the treatment process and answer questions, making Island and his family feel supported and informed every step of the way.
Now post-surgery and navigating recovery, Island is looking forward to the start of physical therapy. “The recovery has been a bit slower for me as I deal with other medical diagnoses, but starting therapy soon has promised improvement in the near future,” he says. “I’m excited to try!”

The care Island has received at Nemours has armed him with the knowledge and tools to take charge of his health. “My goal is to become as independent as possible and earn as much mobility as I can,” Island shares. “I’m already working with a dietician to improve my weight so I can become healthier and stronger.”
One of the most crucial pieces of advice Island would give to others navigating scoliosis is the power of a positive mindset. “You need to be positive and have hope,” Island says. “It is always a pleasure to see Island and family,” shares Dr. Neal. “He is a brave young man who faces his challenges with a positive attitude. It’s been my honor to be a part of his care team.” With the unwavering support of Nemours Children’s and his own tenacity, Island’s future looks promising.
