In the world of sports, injuries are often seen as setbacks, hurdles that athletes must overcome to get back to doing what they love. For Jarnum, a 15-year-old elite soccer player, a left knee lateral meniscus tear threatened to impact his game.
Jarnum is the youngest player in a semi-professional USL2 academy league for Swan City Soccer Club in Lakeland. He holds the distinction of being the youngest player ever to score a goal in the USL2, helping his team secure their sole victory of the season. Unfortunately, it was during his time with this team that Jarnum sustained his injury. While engaged in a defensive play, he collided with another player, resulting in the tear to his left knee.
Jarnum’s mother, Authrine, recalls the moment when their journey with Nemours began. “Dr. Julia Fink could tell that it was a meniscus tear right away,” she says. “But she wanted to have an MRI done first at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida. After MRI confirmation, we met with Dr. Fink again and she scheduled the surgery.” From the initial diagnosis to the surgical procedure, Nemours prioritized Jarnum’s well-being every step of the way.
“When we discovered his tear, Jarnum was just getting into high school soccer,” says Authrine. “He was really upset that he wouldn’t be able to play. But, Dr. Fink encouraged him that they could get him back to playing by the end of the season, just in time for his high school’s districts.” This assurance provided comfort and instilled hope in Jarnum, motivating him to focus on his recovery journey.
Authrine emphasizes the personalized care and attention to detail during Jarnum’s treatment. “Dr. Fink was able to work quickly, getting tests expedited, surgery scheduled, and set up physical therapy,” says Authrine. “And his physical therapist was someone he had worked with before.” The continuity of care, coupled with Dr. Fink’s understanding of the athletic mindset, helped immensely with Jarnum’s recovery. “Being an athlete herself, Dr. Fink really understood the devastation of not playing and Jarnum’s urgency to get back to soccer.”
After his surgery, Jarnum graduated from crutches quickly. While there is still some lingering swelling, he is well on his way to reclaiming full strength and mobility in his knee. Jarnum has a great relationship with his physical therapy team. They even collaborate with his school’s athletic director to ensure he receives necessary support outside of therapy sessions. His positive outlook and commitment to his rehabilitation regimen are testaments to his dedication to the sport.
Authrine expresses confidence in Jarnum’s ongoing recovery, advising him to approach future games with caution to avoid further injuries. Should the need arise, they will undoubtedly turn to Nemours Children’s again for care. Despite his remarkable talent, “Jarnum remains humble,” says Authrine. “He embodies the qualities of a true team player both on and off the field.” As evidenced by his recognition as the MVP for his varsity high school soccer team as a freshman.
Jarnum’s sights are set on a career as a professional soccer player as he continues to pursue his dreams both on and off the field. There’s no doubt that he will inspire countless others to overcome obstacles and chase their passions with unwavering determination.
