At just 14 years old, Anzlie has faced significant challenges, yet she remains determined and strong. A first-year high school student, Anzlie has a passion for animals, even raising chickens in her backyard. She is an athlete and a dedicated student in the International Baccalaureate program, balancing academics with volleyball and CrossFit. Anzlie also manages both Type 1 diabetes and scoliosis, two conditions that require continuous care.

Anzlie’s journey with Type 1 diabetes began shortly after she finished first grade. Her mother noticed that Anzlie was excessively thirsty and had lost weight, prompting them to consult a doctor. The diagnosis was confirmed, and they were quickly referred to Nemours Children’s Health, where Dr. Larry Fox and a supportive endocrinology team helped them learn to manage the condition. Anzlie quickly adapted to monitoring her blood sugar and adjusting insulin.
Despite the challenges of diabetes, Anzlie embraced an active lifestyle. She participated in dance, kids’ CrossFit, surfing lessons, swimming, and played flag football and volleyball. Exercise presented challenges, as it could lead to sudden blood sugar drops that required constant attention. Over the years, she transitioned from multiple daily injections to the Omnipod system, which made her life more manageable.
At age 12, Anzlie was diagnosed with scoliosis, introducing another layer of complexity to her life. Under the care of Dr. Kevin Neal at Nemours Children’s, she was prescribed a back brace. Anzlie’s family pursued a specialized Rigo-Cheneau brace designed to support her condition while accommodating her insulin pump.

Adjusting to the brace alongside her diabetes management was challenging, but Anzlie adapted and continued to enjoy her activities. Weekly scoliosis-focus physical therapy sessions improved her posture and strengthened her back muscles. She also connected with other girls her age facing similar challenges. A recent follow-up with Dr. Neal revealed positive news—her curve hasn’t worsened, and she won’t need surgery.
Throughout her journey, Nemours Children’s has offered exceptional support. Their patient-centered approach empowers Anzlie and her family with the tools and knowledge necessary for managing her health.
As she looks ahead to high school graduation, Anzlie is considering a career in the medical field, eager to explore her interests through specialized courses and potential internships. For now, she continues to thrive, balancing her commitments with resilience and determination.
