For 10-year-old Taylor, every step of her journey has been guided by determination, expert care, and a team that feels more like family. Diagnosed at birth with fibular hemimelia, proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD), clubfoot, and leg length discrepancy, she has faced challenges with mobility from an early age. But with the right medical team by her side, Taylor is making incredible strides toward walking on two evenly balanced feet.
Taylor’s family had long placed their trust in Dr. Shawn Standard, a highly respected specialist in limb lengthening and reconstruction. So when Dr. Standard moved his practice to Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida, in fall 2024, Taylor’s family didn’t hesitate to follow.

Under the care of Dr. Standard, Taylor has undergone a series of treatments designed to improve her mobility and function, including super ankle surgery, external and internal fixators for limb lengthening, ankle fusion, and the placement of 8 plates. Each procedure has been a step toward her ultimate goal: walking on two evenly balanced legs.
From the very beginning, the Nemours Children’s care team has surrounded Taylor with expert medical care and unwavering support. Orthopedic nurse, Kaitlin Cothern, and Nicole Toro-Keister, PA-C have been instrumental in Taylor’s journey, always making sure her family feels informed and supported at every step.
And when it comes to rehabilitation, Brittany Canyock, PT, and the entire Nemours physical and occupational therapy teams—including Brielle, Kim, Emilea, and Jermaine—have made therapy engaging and effective. They create fun activities that keep Taylor motivated, helping her push through the challenges of recovery with a smile.
But perhaps the most unexpected—and beloved—member of Taylor’s care team is Chester, Nemours Children’s facility dog. Chester plays an active role in Taylor’s therapy sessions, offering comfort, motivation, and plenty of tail wags. His presence makes rehab a little more fun and a lot more encouraging!

Taylor’s journey isn’t over yet. She will continue with leg lengthening procedures until she reaches her full growth. But thanks to the support of her family and her dedicated Nemours team, she’s on the path to success.
For families facing similar challenges, Melissa offers these words of encouragement, “Your kiddo will do anything they can dream. There are challenges, but they do not define your kid or their ability. Surgeries come and they recover. Enjoy all the ‘first steps’ after each phase. Always find a way to celebrate the big and the little things along the journey.”
With resilience, expert care, and a little help from Chester, Taylor is proving that every step forward is a victory worth celebrating.
