It Takes A Village: Gabriella’s Story

In October 2016, three-year-old Gabriella’s and her family’s world changed in an instant. She was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of cancer that affects soft tissue. For her parents, Melissa and Shawn, time seemed to stand still.

“So many emotions to describe that minute and the minutes, days, hours, weeks, months, and years since…” Melissa shares. But as they look back, their focus is on gratitude—on the people who stood beside them, the care that lifted them up, and the hope that carried them forward.

Gabriella’s journey began under the care of Dr. Thacker, orthopedic surgeon at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware. “We remember the words he spoke to us,” Melissa recalled. “But more importantly, we remember that his tone and demeanor were filled with sympathy, concern, and hope.” From the very beginning, Dr. Thacker was more than a physician—he was a constant source of support. Through chemotherapy, amputation, infections, and every challenge along the way, he remained by Gabby’s side. “He is our daughter’s true champion,” Melissa said.

Dr. Thacker worked closely with the Nemours Children’s oncology team, guiding Gabriella through 40 weeks of chemotherapy. The doctors and nurses in the department not only provided expert medical care but also became a source of comfort and encouragement. Today, they continue to cheer Gabby on as she moves forward in survivorship.

The family’s gratitude extends far beyond the doctors and nurses. At Nemours, they found an entire community dedicated to lifting them up. “We have encountered so many champions along the way—intake staff, volunteers, maintenance workers, physical therapists, child life specialists, physician assistants, environmental service staff, nutritionists, and therapists,” Melissa said.

Each of these individuals played a role in making the hospital feel like a place of hope rather than fear. Whether through a kind word, a helping hand, or simply their presence, they allowed the family to feel comforted and confident in the care Gabriella was receiving. “Our family would like to express our gratitude to all the staff at Nemours Children’s,” shares Melissa. “It is truly a village of extraordinary individuals who work together to make each family feel hope and support.”

For Gabriella and her family, reflecting on their experience isn’t just about remembering the challenges—they choose to focus on the moments of kindness, strength, and resilience that carried them through. “Having a grateful heart and sharing stories about our gratitude helps heal and allow forward progress,” Melissa said.

As Gabriella continues her journey beyond treatment, one thing is clear: she is surrounded by a village of champions who believe in her strength and celebrate every step forward.
