Angels in Scrubs: Kimberly’s Story

When Kimberly’s son was 4 years old, he ran to answer the phone—his favorite uncle was calling. As he ran into the carpeted family room, he tripped and fell, head-first into the brick fireplace. Kimberly says, “As we know, head lacerations bleed profusely. However, being my first child, having his first major injury, and being pregnant with my second child, I was an absolute mess. Pursuing a Passion for Child Life ­­– Associate Spotlight: Kathryn Sparger

Kathryn Sparger’s journey to becoming a Certified Child Life Specialist was inspired by her sister, who witnessed the incredible impact child life specialists have on patients and their families during her time in nursing school. This insight sparked Kathryn’s interest and set her on a path that she quickly fell in love with. “Child life is such a special career path,” Kathryn shares. “I’m so grateful to our kids and families who have invited me into their lives to care for them.” Kathryn always knew that Nemours Children’s Health was the place she wanted to be a part of. Kimberly Shoe, APN is more than an Advanced Practice Nurse; she’s one of our stars in the Endocrinology Department at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware. She’s been helping to nurture future generations of providers since 2004 at Nemours Children’s, but her connection to her work runs deeper than her job title. Diagnosed with type one diabetes at 5 years old, her journey has connected her on a personal level with her patients. A kid at heart, Kimberly supports patients facing diabetes or other endocrinopathies. She’s an advocate for the transformative power of community, championing diabetes camps, support groups, and family-centered care. Outside of work, Kimberly has a passion for fitness and exercise with a special emphasis on running in marathons and half-marathons. Jonathan decided to become a nurse after his grandfather was diagnosed with bladder cancer. He was inspired by the many great nurses that cared for his grandfather at home and inpatient. Around the time he was graduating high school he was thinking about careers to pursue. Jonathan says, “I knew I liked working with people, and most of all I liked helping. Training the Next Generation of Pediatric Mental Health Providers:

Fellows Share Their Challenges and Triumphs  For Mycah Ayala-Brittain, volunteering in her mother’s special education classroom was her first opportunity to learn how professionals collaborate to meet the needs of children. The classroom had teachers, teaching assistants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, and medical personnel that collaborated to provide individualized care to support children with behavioral health needs.   Throughout her education, Mycah learned about the barriers that families face accessing quality health care. These experiences led her to pursue a doctorate in psychology, expanding her knowledge and allowing her to provide culturally sensitive mental health care. At Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, Dr. Suken A. Shah, The Shands/MacEwen Endowed Chair of Orthopedics and Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, leads with expertise and unwavering dedication to improve the lives of patients. His professional journey is rooted in a commitment to medicine and determination to solve complex cases. Reflecting on his early career decisions, Dr. Shah notes, “I was drawn to surgery early on, particularly during my medical school years.” Exposure to orthopedic surgery and guidance from esteemed mentors set him on the path to becoming a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. Meet Evan Graber, Pediatric Endocrinologist and Program Director of the Pediatric Endocrine Fellowship at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware.  Dr. Graber completed his Pediatrics residency at Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York and his Pediatric Endocrine Fellowship at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.  He has been working at Nemours ever since and can’t imagine a better place to work. “I knew I wanted to work with children back as a teenage camp counselor.  My interest in science drove me towards medicine in college and being a pediatrician has been such a privilege and joy.  I could not imagine working with any other population of patients. Meet Megan Nelson, a passionate Speech Language Pathologist at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida. Megan’s journey into her career began with a personal connection close to her heart – her cousin Katie, born with CHARGE syndrome and hearing loss. Erin’s path in healthcare began as an EMT and Paramedic working for a fire department. However, she had big dreams of becoming a flight RN one day. “While completing school for nursing, I had the opportunity to work as a civilian combat medic in Afghanistan where I was able to provide aid to our soldiers and fly,” shares Erin. “From there, I was able to get a job at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida as a Paramedic in the Clinical Logistics Center until I received my RN license. I then began working in the RN resource pool, allowing me to get experience in all units of the hospital. Associate Highlight: Melissa’s Therapy Journey

Melissa knew at a young age that she wanted to be a speech pathologist. When she was young, her grandfather had a stroke which helped influence the path she wanted to eventually take in life. After school, she would often walk to her grandparent’s house to play cards and visit until her Dad could pick her up. Often, after walking to their house she would arrive, and her grandfather was receiving his speech therapy sessions. Watching the therapist work with her grandfather and the care she took looking out for him, she decided she wanted to do the same thing.
