Born with a leg length discrepancy on his left side, including a malformation of his left foot, Brayden faced unique challenges that grew more pronounced with each passing year. As a mom, Melissa she feared the impact on Brayden’s hips, back, and overall well-being. Despite the obstacles, Brayden’s resilience and the unwavering support of Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware have been a beacon of hope.
Living With A Leg Length Discrepancy
From the moment he was born, it was clear that everything on Brayden’s left side was smaller, including his left foot and leg. The malformation of his left foot was particularly concerning, and as he grew, the leg length discrepancy became more and more apparent. Adding a shoe lift on Brayden’s left side was a crucial adjustment that helped him walk more evenly.

However, by the time Brayden reached middle school, the lift had grown both in size and in its impact on his daily life. “Over the years, the lift became larger and thicker, which in turn became more noticeable to the rest of the world,” shares Melissa. “Being a middle school student with a lift that looks like a block on the bottom of your shoe can be very embarrassing. It also became dangerous in some ways with the lift being so large it looked like an ankle injury waiting to happen if taking the wrong step.” The lift became a source of anxiety for the entire family.
The family’s concerns extended beyond the immediate physical challenges. “We knew that if we didn’t address the leg length discrepancy, it could lead to serious issues with his hips and back in the future,” Melissa adds. The medical team at Nemours Children’s had been monitoring Brayden’s condition closely, and it was clear that a more permanent solution was needed.
Brayden’s journey with Nemours began immediately after his birth when he was also diagnosed with colonic atresia, a condition that required an ileostomy. The seamless transition from the hospital to Nemours for surgery was the first of many positive experiences we would have with the facility. Over the years, Brayden has relied on a wide array of Nemours specialties, including orthopedics, ophthalmology, neurology, lab work, X-rays, pediatrics, and various therapy services. Each visit, whether for a routine check-up or a more complex procedure, has been marked by the dedication and professionalism of the medical team.
A Team That Understands
Currently, Brayden is under the care of Dr. Mihir Thacker, a specialist who has not only provided expert medical treatment but has also formed a unique and supportive relationship with Brayden. Dr. Thacker’s approach is particularly noteworthy, as he accepts Brayden for who he is, including all his differences and challenges. Brayden, with his old soul and preference for adult interactions, can be a difficult patient to engage, but Dr. Thacker’s understanding and patience have made a significant difference. “He’s created a relationship that works for them in order to get the most success,” says Melissa. This personalized care extends to the entire team, including Madison Maines, PA-C, and the X-ray and MRI technicians. Madison, despite not having known Brayden for as long as some of the other specialists, has quickly become a trusted and comforting presence, creating a welcoming and positive environment that helps Brayden feel at ease during his appointments.

The physical therapy team at Nemours, including, Justina, Nicole, and Natalie, has also played a crucial role in Brayden’s recovery and development. Whether it’s in rehab or working in the pool with Ms. Karen, their commitment to his well-being is evident in every session.
Brayden’s recent leg lengthening surgery was a testament to the team’s expertise and the strong bond they have built with him. The combination of Dr. Thacker’s surgical skills and the therapists’ ongoing support has been instrumental in Brayden’s progress. Each member of the Nemours team has gone above and beyond to meet Brayden’s needs. “It was fun to be able to connect with him using his own brand of humor,” shares Dr. Thacker. “Taking care of Brayden involved not only lengthening his leg with a special magnetically controlled rod but more importantly making a connection with him and building trust in the team to the point where he and his family were able to negotiate a fairly long lengthening process with relative ease. This was a testament to the family-centered care that we provide here at Nemours.” The team’s collective efforts have not only improved his physical health but have also boosted his confidence.
Brayden’s medical needs have been complex and the support he has received have been unwavering. “My family and I are beyond thankful for the help, support, and commitment our Nemours Team has had throughout the years,” says Melissa.
