ENT Awareness Month: Jeremiah’s Story

For Aleecia, Jeremiah’s mom, the first few days of her newborn’s life were filled with a mix of joy and growing concern. Jeremiah was born with no voice, a stark contrast to the usual cries of a newborn. The absence of his voice was the first indication that something was amiss.

After just three days, ENT specialists at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware made a startling discovery: Jeremiah’s vocal cords were fused together, a rare and life-threatening condition known as congenital laryngeal web. Aleecia found herself thrust into a role she never imagined she would have to play. “The inability to breathe or cry properly meant we were in a state of immediate crisis from the moment he was born,” she recalls. “It was a frightening diagnosis that required immediate, specialized intervention.”

The urgency of the situation was evident, and the surgical team at Nemours Children’s wasted no time in preparing for the necessary intervention. Dr. Patrick Barth, Pediatric Otolaryngologist, was brought in to perform a micro-laryngeal surgery. The procedure, which involves carefully separating or widening the fused vocal cords, is both delicate and critical. With the support of the medical team and their unwavering determination, Aleecia and Jeremiah faced the challenge head-on, knowing that this surgery was the first step in giving Jeremiah a voice and a chance at a healthy life.

Aleecia vividly remembers the day they arrived at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, when Jeremiah was just three days old. “The Nemours team moved with incredible speed and expertise,” she shares. Within just eight hours of arrival, Jeremiah was in emergency surgery.

Aleecia found comfort in the emotional support provided by the Nemours team. “My favorite thing was their ability to handle a high-stakes emergency while still supporting me through the most terrifying time of my life,” she says. Being a new mother, already navigating the challenges of postpartum, Aleecia was overwhelmed with worry and fear. The doctors, nurses, and support staff were not only knowledgeable and patient but also deeply empathetic. They took the time to explain every step of the process, answer her questions, and provide reassurance when she needed it most. “Being a new mom going through postpartum in the midst of not knowing if my baby is going to make it, I appreciated that they were emotionally there for me the whole way,” Aleecia adds. This combination of medical expertise and compassionate care made all the difference.

After the initial surgery, Jeremiah’s progress was closely monitored, and his care plan was carefully evaluated. The Nemours team remained vigilant, ensuring that every detail of his recovery was attended to with the utmost care. In total, Jeremiah underwent three surgeries, each one bringing him closer to health and stability. “We feel incredibly grateful,” Aleecia says, reflecting on the journey. “Seeing and hearing the progress he has made from those first critical days to where he is now is a testament to the skill of the surgical team.”

Today, Jeremiah is 13-year-olds, a far cry from the fragile newborn who underwent emergency surgeries. “He has a nice deep voice now, haha!” Aleecia shares joyfully, a testament to the remarkable progress he has made. The family’s focus is now on watching Jeremiah grow and thrive, exploring the possibilities and opportunities that lie ahead. “We’re excited to see him find the voice we weren’t sure he would ever have.”

The journey hasn’t been easy, but it has taught Aleecia a lot about the importance of advocacy and trust in medical expertise. To other mothers navigating similar scenarios, she offers this advice: “Be your child’s biggest advocate! Trust your gut if you feel they need a higher level of care or a second opinion. Don’t be afraid to push for the best specialists and never settle for less when it comes to your child’s well-being. Places like Nemours are built for these exact moments.”

While Jeremiah hasn’t needed follow-up care in about ten years, Aleecia remains confident in Nemours’ ability to support Jeremiah if the need arises. “If anything comes up, I trust in the care at Nemours to keep him on the right track,” she says. This trust is not just a reflection of the medical expertise at Nemours but also of the compassionate and dedicated team that stood by Jeremiah and his family during their darkest hours. As Jeremiah continues to grow and flourish, the lessons learned and the bonds formed during his early years serve as a foundation for a bright future.
