Associate Highlight: Brittany Virgil, PT

Brittany’s path to Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware wasn’t just a series of steps, but a journey fueled by a passion for helping others. Growing up, Brittany had a special bond with her younger cousin, whom she affectionately called her “Little Buddy.” Her cousin was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP). Watching him navigate daily challenges and seeing the transformative power of physical therapy (PT) in his life made an impact on Brittany. “The first time I went to his PT session, I instantly knew it was what I wanted to do when I grew up,” shares Brittany. “It is not often that you choose a career when you are so young and it comes true, but for me it did. I work every day in my cousin’s honor, who passed away at a young age.”

At Nemours Children’s, Brittany’s role as a Physical Therapist and Cerebral Palsy (CP) Lead in the Therapy and Rehabilitation Services is where she truly shines. Every day, she works closely with young patients, helping them overcome physical challenges and achieve their goals. “I love working at Nemours and getting to make a difference in kiddo’s lives every day,” says Brittany. “I love to be able to see them progress and meet their goals; it makes me very proud to do what I do.”

In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Brittany is deeply involved in research. She works alongside the orthopedic departments and the gait analysis laboratory, contributing to studies that aim to improve the quality of life for children and young adults with cerebral palsy and other developmental conditions. “I would like to continue my career clinically as I am, in inpatient rehabilitation, but continue to build on my work in research as well,” she shares. “The two worlds of clinical care and research working together to better care for children and young adults is where I like to be.”

Brittany’s growth and success at Nemours have been significantly influenced by the mentorship she has received. Dr. Wade Shrader and Nancy Lennon have been instrumental in guiding her career, providing opportunities for professional development with the support of her manager, Kelly Wascheck. Since working with them, Brittany has had the chance to present her research at national and international conferences. “My biggest accomplishment in research so far is probably my first time presenting at AACPDM in 2023 because I was presenting among my idols and very top people in their fields, as a peer,” says Brittany.

Brittany’s favorite aspect of her role is the laughter and smiles that fill the rehabilitation center. “Favorite memories are added every day,” says Brittany. “Working in inpatient rehab, I get to see kiddos come so far, meet goals, smile and make themselves, their families, and their team proud everyday.”

Outside of her professional life, Brittany’s interests revolve around her family. “My husband and I have two beautiful and active girls,” she says. “I enjoy traveling, hiking, reading, and coaching them in sports.”

Brittany’s story illustrates the impact that rehabilitation and physical therapists can have on the lives of children. Through her dedication and expertise, Brittany helps her patients overcome physical challenges and achieve their goals, bringing joy and pride to both the children and their families.
