In November 2024, 2-year-old Caleigh woke up not feeling well and with concerning symptoms. Her family noticed red areas under both of her armpits and took her to her pediatrician for assessment.
“She was being treated for Strep Throat and Scarlet Fever,” shares her mother, Megan. However, after two days, Caleigh’s condition only worsened, and she stopped eating and drinking. “Caleigh wasn’t getting better,” says Megan. “My husband & I decided to take her into our local ER where she was evaluated.”
Upon arrival, the medical team assessed Caleigh and suspected Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome (SSSS), a rare but serious condition caused by a Staphylococcus toxin. The severity of her symptoms and rapid progression left no room for delay. “Within a few hours, she was on a helicopter being flown to Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, in the middle of the night with us following behind in our vehicle,” says Megan.

Once she arrived, Caleigh was treated with IV fluids and antibiotics. Her stay at Nemours Children’s was marked by exceptional care. One person stood out during Caleigh’s treatment at Nemours: Connor Byrne, RN. His presence was instrumental in Caleigh’s recovery. “We can’t say enough good things about the doctors, nurses and staff at Nemours,” says Megan. “But one in particular comes to mind. Connor Byrne, RN was absolutely amazing with Caleigh during her admission. The care that Connor gave to our daughter will always be cherished. He was patient, kind, caring, considerate, and always asked permission from her before providing any care. From his assessment to administering medications, even though she was only 2 years old, he made sure he explained everything to her on her level. Because of his care, Caleigh took her medicine and participated in her own care by allowing him to look at her skin.”
“It was a big deal that Connor got through to Caleigh the way he did,” says Megan. “She didn’t want anyone looking at her skin, let alone touching it. He got on her level, provided care, and we saw Caleigh let her guard down and allow him to help her.” This breakthrough was a relief to Megan and her husband Chris, who were comforted by the care Connor showed their daughter. Megan emphasizes how painful and uncomfortable Caleigh’s condition was, and she was blown away by Connor’s ability to earn her daughter’s trust to the point where Caleigh allowed him to perform a detailed skin assessment. “I wish we could give him a big hug because he truly has a gift,” says Megan. “I hope that Connor is encouraged to continue his work and know that he is making a real difference.”
Thanks to the swift and comprehensive care she received at Nemours, Caleigh was able to recover from SSSS quickly. Megan praises the hospital’s efficiency and the exceptional care provided by Connor and the entire Nemours team. “Caleigh has completely recovered, and we are so grateful for Nemours,” says Megan. “They were quick about getting her flown to the facility and getting her treatment started as soon as possible. My husband & I have discussed this, and we will always bring our children to Nemours for care.”
Connor is a shining example of the exceptional care provided at Nemours Children’s. His compassion, kindness, and dedication to his patients make him an outstanding nurse. As Megan and her family continue to heal and grow, they will always be grateful for Connor’s role in Caleigh’s recovery.
For other’s navigating similar situations, Megan advises, “Always listen to your gut, because it’ll never lead you astray and advocate for your child. Caring for children in the hospital can be stressful and overwhelming, always take care of yourself. Go buy that coffee, go for a walk and get fresh air, meditate and pray or sit and watch a movie with your child. You can’t take care of your child if you don’t take care of yourself first.”
