From Trauma to Triumph: Briar’s Story

10-year-old Briar is no stranger to adventure. An active and energetic boy, he loved riding his mini bike—until a life-changing accident on September 18, 2024, left him with serious injuries. While riding, Briar was hit by a car, suffering fractures to his leg, both hands, clavicle, and skull, as well as trauma to his leg and chest. He was stabilized at the scene and airlifted to Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, where a team of experts was ready to provide the care he needed.

Briar’s injuries required immediate attention. Upon arrival at Nemours Children’s, he was rushed into surgery to repair his leg and chest. His care team, including Dr. Duke (Trauma surgery), Dr. Trionfo (Orthopedic surgery), Bernadette Fulweiler, APN (Wound Care), and Dr. Haas (Rehab Medicine), worked together to ensure he had the best possible outcome.

Katie, Briar’s mom, recalls the overwhelming emotions of that day. “When we landed at Nemours, I believe I was still in shock, trying to hold it together. But everyone we encountered was amazing. They explained everything as they were doing it and walked us through the next steps.”

Following surgery, Briar began a rigorous recovery process that included wound care and physical therapy to help him regain his strength and mobility. Though he was sent home in a wheelchair, his care team remained in close contact, guiding the family through every step of the healing journey. “The wound care and orthopedics team were amazing. They were in contact with us almost every day for months,” Katie shares. “We are forever thankful for them.”

Thanks to the expertise of his Nemours care team, Briar has made a remarkable recovery. He now has full motion in all extremities and no restrictions. His leg and chest wounds are fully healed, and he has recovered from his head injury. Katie credits the dedication and skill of his doctors and nurses for helping Briar regain his strength.

Through it all, the family found more than just exceptional medical care at Nemours. “We don’t live close to Nemours, but we knew it was the best option for our son,” Katie says. “Recovery can be long and difficult, but be patient and trust the medical team—they have your loved one’s best interest at heart. We are forever grateful for the entire team at Nemours and not just the medical team. Everyone was so nice and made sure we had everything we needed for our extended stay and for when we got home.” Briar’s journey is one of resilience, hope, and expert care. While his accident changed his path, his determination and the unwavering support of his care team helped him return to the active life he loves. His story is a testament to the power of teamwork, trust, and never giving up hope.
