For 15-year-old Bryan, his journey toward better health has been a collaborative effort powered by determination and expert care. Diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth, Bryan has faced challenges his entire life, but as he’s gotten older it’s been his obesity related fatigue that has significantly affected and limited his daily activities. With the support from his family and the dedicated team at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, Bryan is now thriving.

Bryan joined Nemours Children’s Bariatric Program in 2022 after transitioning from another hospital to be closer to home. The bariatric program is dedicated to helping teens with obesity achieve better health through expert care and support. The program specializes in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, a minimally invasive weight loss surgery that reduces the size of the stomach to help teens eat less and feel less hungry. As the only pediatric weight management program and hospital accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), the program is recognized for its excellence in safely performing weight-loss surgery for teens. Their expert team focuses on physical health, emotional well-being, and lasting success. Families are fully involved in every step, from decision-making to post-surgery care, ensuring teens adopt healthy habits that can improve their overall quality of life.
After careful evaluation, Bryan’s care team determined that gastric sleeve surgery was the best option to help him achieve and maintain a healthy weight. According to his mom, Sheriese, it was a decision that marked the start of a new chapter. “Dr. Uzelac has been excellent from the very beginning of the program,” Sheriese shared. Dr. Cohen also played a key role in preparing Bryan mentally and emotionally for surgery, providing guidance and knowledge at every step. When it came time for Bryan’s sleeve gastrectomy, Dr. Reichard performed the procedure without complications.

“Bryan looks and feels great,” Sheriese shares proudly. “We are pleased with the outcome.” She’s especially grateful for the care and expertise of the entire team, noting their support throughout Bryan’s treatment.
Bryan’s recovery has been a source of hope for his family. “All the work going into the surgery and post-surgery has been positive,” Sheriese explained. With the hardest part behind him, Bryan is now focusing on building a healthy, active lifestyle. He and his mom are now able to enjoy longer walks outside together and his energy level is higher than it’s ever been. His family envisions a future where he makes informed choices about his health and food.
For families navigating similar challenges, Sheriese shares this advice, “Take your lifestyle seriously. Being at a healthy weight is very important so that you are able to enjoy all the adventures that life holds.”
With the continued support of Nemours, Bryan is ready to embrace a brighter, healthier future.
