From Diagnosis to Determination: Allen’s Brain Tumor Journey

Allen’s sophomore year was marked by academic and athletic success. A dual-enrolled student at Flagler High School and Dayton State College, he excelled in soccer, cross country, and track with an impressive 4.5 GPA. He was a driven 16-year-old, aiming to achieve the big goals he had set for himself.

Allen vividly recalls discovering his double vision: “I woke up, and I saw two of my mom. Overnight, it became a whirlwind. To accommodate my double vision, I covered one of my lenses with black tape in order to maintain my academic and extracurricular activities.” His mother and sister scheduled an appointment with an eye specialist after discovering Allen’s home remedy to cover one eye. They initially suspected a multiple sclerosis diagnosis. “That’s when I received a referral to see a neurologist, which began my journey with Nemours Children’s Health. Little did he know that March 9, 2018, would be the beginning of a life-altering journey for Allen. The evaluation for the double vision symptoms Allen experienced led to a Mixed Germ Cell Brain Tumor within the Pineal Gland diagnosis.

Allen expresses gratitude for the comprehensive care provided by the Nemours Children’s team: “Throughout my treatment, I received services on the oncology, ophthalmology, endocrinology, neurology, and psychology floors. My oncologist, Dr. Sandler, ensured the best care by being supportive, empathetic, and understanding.” Allen also shares his experience through his treatment plan, “I am grateful for the connection Nemours has with UF Health. Dr. Aldana and his team performed my six brain surgeries. Dr. Bradley provided care during my 40 proton radiation treatments. Dr. Aldana, Dr. Sandler, Dr. Bradley, and their team communicated and decided on the best treatment plan. Although the treatments were high risk, they ensured they were doing their best.”

During this difficult time, Allen’s family experienced some financial hardships due to the extended hospital stays for Allen’s treatment. Thankfully, Allen’s family encountered support from his social worker, Miss Kristine, and foundations like Tom Coughlin Jay Fund and Dreams Come True to help navigate this aspect of their lives. Allen was comforted by both the Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Nemours Children’s teams in Jacksonville, Florida. He shares, “Through physical therapy, cognitive therapy, talking to the nurses or even with volunteers, they provided a bright environment for my recovery and healing. This not only allowed my family to push through but also allowed me to feel confident that I was in excellent care.”

Despite facing depression, PTSD, and proprioception issues, Allen’s positive attitude prevailed. He is now a Certified Medical Assistant with an associate degree from Daytona State College. Running, gym workouts, tai chi, and active involvement in his church group contribute to his ongoing recovery. He is also actively involved in several childhood cancer groups, where he has the opportunity to talk to children and families who have recently been diagnosed and share similar journeys. Allen envisions a future in public relations, aiming to bring awareness to stories and organizations close to his heart. He also shares a project for the near future, his autobiography. “This [autobiography] would be to share my story, all the joys, as well as the sad parts, because as we age, we realize that life goes up and it goes down. I want to create a realistic aspect to the experience and show [the] vulnerable parts and how I got through them.” Showcasing vulnerability and resilience while embracing a mindful lifestyle, he wants to emphasize the importance of not delaying life’s pursuits.

Allen advises those facing a similar journey to stay upbeat, indulge in music and dance, live each day with intention, and set achievable goals. “I loved to play upbeat music because it made me happy. I would also dance while I’m playing music. It was fun and made every interaction fun for me. I also lived each day with intention or goals based on what the treatment was. I distracted myself by playing games with my family and friends.” He also emphasizes the power of positivity in the recovery process: “Be sure to walk around and look for the happy parts or at least try to incorporate some kind of happiness within your days.

Being positive or having a positive outlook on your situation plays a big role in recovery.”

In Allen’s story, we find not just a tale of triumph over adversity, but also a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the support of a dedicated medical team. As he continues to inspire others, Allen looks toward the future with hope, determination, and a commitment to making each day count.
