In celebration of Doctors’ Day, we want to highlight the incredible work of two doctors who not only share a passion for the care of children, but also a deep love for each other.
Dr. Mihir Thacker and Dr. Deepika Thacker first met while attending Seth Gordhandas Sunderas Medical College in Mumbai, India. “Mihir was 2 years my senior and had a very serious air about him,” says Dr. Deepika Thacker. “He was very focused and always studying. As I got to know him better, I discovered that he had a very fun side as well and a wicked sense of humor! We were friends before we started dating, and to this date, we remain friends in addition to being married. We love playing board games with the family, taking trips and trying new foods together!”
Deepika recalls, when they began dating as teenagers, “He would take me out to watch Hindi movies that I loved, usually with ones with slapstick humor and an implausible storyline, all song and dance! I thought he loved them as much as I did. It was only a few years after we were married that I realized how much he hated them and only suffered through them for my sake!”
The pair joined the team after Dr. Mihir Thacker visited Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware for a conference and fell in love with the place. He applied for an open fellowship spot for the next year and was accepted! Deepika came to visit Mihir while he was a fellow at Nemours and she agreed, there was no better place to work! The Drs. Thacker have been with us ever since!
Deepika and Mihir love working at Nemours. “We love the commute, how well connected it is, and the free and ample parking!” they say. “The people are nice (that’s Delaware for you in general!). But most importantly, it is really like one big family, including the patients and coworkers!” Some of their favorite memories from their time at Nemours Children’s include when their kids were little, on weekends when they were both on call, they would bring them to work and take turns rounding. Then they would all head over to the cafeteria for lunch!
