At 19 years old, Zoey is pursuing her dream of becoming a hairstylist while managing a complex medical condition. For the past seven years, she has dealt with frequent bathroom trips, urinary retention, and persistent pelvic pain—challenges that have impacted her daily life. But through it all, she has found expert care and unwavering support at Nemours Children’s Health.
Zoey’s symptoms began when she was just 13. She noticed she was using the restroom 15-30 times a day, with nights just as difficult. Despite constantly feeling like she needed to use the restroom, she was often unable to release urine. The discomfort affected her ability to focus in school, spend time with friends, and simply go about her day. “This condition has taken over the way I live,” Zoey shared.

Zoey’s search for answers led her to Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida, where she was connected with Dr. Hagerty, a urologist at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware and an expert in sacral neuromodulation. Although Dr. Hagerty was based in Delaware, she initially saw Zoey via telemedicine, ensuring Zoey could access specialized care she needed. Throughout her time at Nemours Children’s, Zoey has been supported by a team dedicated to finding solutions, but it was Dr. Hagerty’s expertise and commitment that truly made a difference in her journey.
“She was the first one to actually listen and constantly found ways to help me,” Zoey says. “She made me feel heard. I’m truly thankful for Dr. Hagerty—she really cares about her patients.” Though her medical journey is ongoing, Zoey has gained confidence in managing her condition.
One of the most impactful aspects of Zoey’s journey was the collaboration between Nemours locations. Zoey and her family traveled to Delaware for treatment, and Dr. Hagerty also came to Orlando to see her in person and provided additional follow-ups via telemedicine. This level of coordination ensured that Zoey had access to the best possible care without disrupting her daily life.
Zoey’s case is a great example of Nemours’ enterprise-wide collaboration, where specialists across locations work together to provide personalized, expert care. In fact, Nemours doctors meet regularly to discuss complex cases, ensuring that every patient benefits from the knowledge and experience of an entire network of specialists.

Despite the challenges she faces, Zoey is focused on her goals. She is currently attending cosmetology school, determined to build a career where she can help others feel confident and beautiful. “My dream is to be a hairstylist,” she says. “I want to make others feel beautiful in their own skin.”
For other patients facing complex medical conditions, Zoey encourages self-advocacy and keeping track of symptoms. “Journal everything—even videos and photos are important,” says Zoey. She also offers a message to parents, “Support your child, stand strong on what they are feeling, and advocate for them. This time isn’t easy for them.”
Zoey’s journey with Nemours has been one of expert care, compassion, and empowerment. Now, as she transitions to an adult urologist, she carries with her the strong foundation and support she received from her care team at Nemours Children’s.
