For elite gymnast Maddy, the journey to greatness wasn’t without its hurdles. But with determination and the expert care at Nemours Children’s Health, Maddy is back on her feet, ready to conquer the mat once again.
Maddy’s athletic career took an unexpected turn on January 25, 2023, during a routine practice session at Temple University. A gymnast on the collegiate team, she faced a setback that would challenge her both physically and mentally—a ruptured Achilles tendon.
Before receiving treatment at Nemours Children’s, Maddy experienced the full weight of her injury. “I was unable to walk, move my foot in any direction, and do everyday activities like go to class,” she recalls. “I was also in an abundance of pain every day that led to many mental breakdowns.”
Having received treatment from Nemours Children’s Health, Jacksonville for years growing up, she knew she would get exceptional care for her new injury. “I discovered Nemours many years ago when I competed in club gymnastics,” says Maddy. “I had been treated at Nemours for stress fractures, strains, and numerous tendon tears. Every time I went to Nemours, I was always treated properly and it has shown with my recovery from every injury! I decided to seek care at Nemours in Jacksonville because that is where I felt most comfortable! I trusted that the doctors and physicians would be the best fit for me and my recovery.”
With the guidance of Dr. Rambo and her team, Maddy underwent a repair surgery for her tendon and found the support she needed. “Nemours is a great place to be!” she says. “The nurses, doctor, and clinicians are always there to help you both physically and mentally. Specifically, Dr. Rambo understood what it was like to be a Division I athlete and she carried that into my recovery plan, which was much appreciated.” It’s this personalized approach that made all the difference for her.
When it comes to her recovery, Maddy is filled with optimism: “I am feeling great about my recovery and believe that I will be able to get back to where I was before. This injury has been very hard for me; however, the staff at Nemours has provided me with the tools I need to come back even better.” Since her surgery, Maddy has recovered her strength and was able to compete in the 2023-2024 winter season.
Looking ahead, Maddy’s goals remain firmly in sight. “My plans for the future consist of being able to help my team out the best I possibly can.” And with the lessons learned from her injury, Maddy is ready to soar to new heights. For those facing a similar journey, Maddy offers these words of wisdom: “Embrace the journey. You can learn so many things about yourself during this process! The hard days will be very hard, but an even brighter future is in the works.” With Nemours Children’s by her side, Maddy is ready to push herself to greatness once again.
