On this Doctors’ Day, Nemours Children’s Health spotlights one of its esteemed physicians, Dr. Richard H. Sandler.
Dr. Sandler is a physician in the Gastroenterology department at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida. His journey to becoming a doctor was inspired by a love for science, problem-solving, and a deep-rooted desire to help people. After majoring in nuclear engineering in college, he took a detour to work for the US Senate Environment Subcommittee. Here, his passion for making an impact on people’s lives became evident. In 1975, the realization that medicine was the perfect fit set him on a path he remains grateful for every day.
Recruited in 2011 to build the GI division and pediatrics department at the new Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida, Dr. Sandler developed a connection with the institution and his colleagues. For him, the heart of Nemours lies in the caring, smart, hardworking, and devoted community of doctors and health professionals.
Beyond the realm of medicine, Dr. Sandler expresses himself through music. A skilled classical cellist, trombonist, and flutist/recorder player, he blends the art of music with patient care. He is often putting on performances for children in the hospital.
Dr. Sandler shares that his hobbies and medical profession all fit together. Both his musical and medical endeavors require, “Paying attention with humility and joy, and continuing to learn, observe, and serve,” says Dr. Sandler.
Dr. Sandler shares a memorable musical incident that his patients might be surprised to learn. During 1972, he found himself playing at a ball for the re-election of President Nixon held in a DC hotel. “I had my trombone with me, having just returned from a lesson, when I came across the ball,” says Dr. Sandler. “There were several thousand people dancing to a band. I went up to the band guys, and asked if I could play with them. I remember taking the lead on a rousing version of ‘Watermelon Man’ that had the entire ball room joyously dancing. It was amazing!”
Additionally, Dr. Sandler’s commitment to standing up for what is right led him to a regional leadership position in the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, a testament to Dr. Sandler’s unwavering dedication to global well-being. The highlight of this advocacy was the group being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985.
As we celebrate Doctors’ Day, Nemours Children’s Health is proud to have Dr. Sandler on our team. His influence extends beyond the confines of the hospital, touching lives through the power of music, advocacy, and a compassionate spirit.
