Care You Can Trust: Emerson & Lilly’s Story

For Latisha, osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) has always been a part of life. Diagnosed around age 6 after multiple leg fractures, she knew the challenges that came with the condition. When she became a mother, she was determined to find the best possible care for her children. That search let her to Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware – the same place she had come to trust for her own care. Her children, Emerson and Lilly, were both diagnosed with Type 1 OI at birth. “Without the care from Dr. Franzone and the entire OI team, I’m not sure where my kids would be,” Latisha shared. OI, commonly known as brittle bone disease, is a genetic disorder that prevents the body from building strong bones. For Emerson, those fractures started early – he broke his leg three times in just one year after learning to walk. Lilly also faced fractures within months of […]

Determined to find the best care for her daughter, Carrie discovered Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, a nationally recognized leader in OI treatment. “I wanted the best specialists I could find for her,” shares Carrie. At just 21 years old, Sparsh has already achieved what many only dream of, inspiring and touching the hearts of millions across the globe. Osteogenesis Imperfecta Awareness Week: Mackenzie’s Story

In the world of healthcare, finding a place that feels like home can be a challenge. For Amanda, mother of 4-year-old Mackenzie, that home is Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware. Mackenzie’s journey with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) began even before she took her first breath. At just 25 weeks, Amanda learned of her daughter’s diagnosis. “I went for a routine anatomy scan while pregnant. Significant bowing in Mackenzie’s legs and long limb measurements indicated that she would need more testing. I received an amnio and was sent to another hospital where she was diagnosed,” Amanda recalls. Transitioning Mackenzie’s care to Nemours Children’s was a pivotal moment for their family. They discovered the facility after finding recommendations on social media. “We are part of a group on Facebook for parents of children with OI,” says Amanda. “I was asking questions when Mackenzie broke her arm at 10 days old and someone recommended we […]

Living a Full Life with Osteogenesis Imperfecta: Adira’s Story

Contributed by Adira’s mom Ashley. The first inkling that something wasn’t right came at my first ultrasound. My baby’s femur was bent at a 90-degree angle when it was supposed to be straight. A subsequent ultrasound showed fractures in her skull and irregular shaped ribs.  I was referred to a large prenatal referral center for an amniocentesis that confirmed a diagnosis of Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI).  Consultations with the prenatal group suggested that this form of OI was very severe and incompatible with life.   I was devastated and searched the internet to find help. Miraculously, I connected with a mother who had been in a similar situation.  She referred me to the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Program at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware.  We met the entire OI team the same day and geneticist, Dr. Michael Bober told us, “I promise you that we will do everything we can for your baby.”  Additional […]

Expert Question and Answer

Expert Q&A: Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI)

Questions about osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), or “brittle bone disease,” are answered by pediatric orthopedics experts at Nemours Children’s Health. Q: When should people with OI get rods in the bones in the legs? A: We view realigning and rodding the bones in the legs, femurs and the tibias as a way to address deformity or bowing that is interfering with each patient’s motor development or causing recurrent fractures. We feel there is no minimum age, this is something that we really do value, continually assessing on an individualized basis to help each patient reach their potential. Q: How would you describe the use of orthotics in patients with OI? A: The word orthotics generally refers to all types of braces or things we put on patients’ arms or legs to help them function better. We use them on a case-by-case basis. Years ago we used to use heavy long leg […]
