Debby Miller, MSN, RN, CPN, CNL, has been an integral part of Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware for over two decades. She started as a Nursing Assistant in the Emergency Department (ED) in September 1999 and is now an Associate Nurse Manager in the 3West unit.
Her continuous pursuit of excellence marks Debby’s career trajectory. Despite initially having no plans to become a registered nurse due to familial responsibilities, the encouragement from her peers and the support of the Nemours Children’s tuition reimbursement program propelled her forward. Debby reflects, “I never had any intention of becoming an RN because we had six kids to get through college.” Despite facing challenges, she was determined to succeed. With the support of her loved ones, she completed her associate degree in 2006, which allowed her to start working as an RN on 2A, the Rehab Unit. She continued to pursue her education and earned her bachelor’s degree in 2010, followed by a master’s degree in clinical nurse leadership from Drexel University in 2019. Additionally, she holds certifications in CNL and CPN.
Her transition from bedside nursing to the role of Associate Nurse Manager was inspired by Nurse Manager Monica Boyle, MSN, RN, NE-BC, a mentor who saw potential in Debby and encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone. “I started as a Nursing Assistant, and loved that position. I enjoyed the time I got to spend with my patients. I moved into my nursing career and was certain I would never leave the bedside. I then met Monica Boyle, who encouraged me to grow and step out of my comfort zone. I took on the Associate Nurse Manager role and love this position. I am not at the bedside, but I love caring for my nurses now. Nemours made this all possible for me.”
Debby’s connection to Nemours runs deeper than her professional journey. Her introduction to the hospital came when her son was diagnosed with idiopathic thrombocytopenia at the age of 4. It was a scary time for her and her family. Still, the exceptional care he received during his treatment left a lasting impression on Debby. Additionally, the recommendation of a friend who worked at Nemours further solidified her decision. She recounts, “I also had a friend who worked with me at a doctor’s office while she was in school for her nursing degree. When she received her degree, she started working at Nemours. She raved about Nemours and encouraged me to apply. So, I took the chance! I worked at the doctor’s office and Nemours for a few years until I went to school for nursing. Then, I quit the job at the doctor’s office and stayed with Nemours.”
At the heart of Debby’s experience at Nemours lies the fellowship and support of her colleagues on 3 West, as well as the rehab, orthopedic, and neurology units. Led by the exceptional leadership of Monica Boyle for over 13 years, the team exemplifies unity and compassion. Debby emphasizes, “We have the most incredible team. 3West is the best place to work. Our team works together. We are there for each other. 3West is a team that has each other’s backs. We support each other and celebrate each other. We have been, and continue to be, a strong support system for each other during challenging times both at work and at home.” Their commitment extends beyond patient care to community service, exemplified by their decade-long initiative of serving meals to the food insecure population of Elkton, Maryland. She proudly states, “Everyone contributes money or food each month…I am so thankful for this team. I have made forever friends on 3West. “
Reflecting on her time at Nemours, Debby cherishes the moments of growth, friendship, and support she has experienced. One poignant memory stands out—her decision to leave the chaotic environment of the ED at that time, only to be offered a lifeline by a compassionate leader who recognized her potential and facilitated her transfer to the rehab unit. She recalls, “She asked me if I would stay if she moved me to another department. I said sure! She asked me where I wanted to go, and I said the rehab unit. I wanted to see the patient’s progress in the rehab department. I wanted to build relationships with my patients and families. She put my transfer in, and I have been with the 2A/3W team ever since! I am so thankful for this leader who cared about a nursing assistant in the ED. “
